A Letter to Graduating Seniors
To all my graduating seniors,
My name is Olivia and I’m a graduating student intern here at the Sexual Assault & Violence Prevention Resource Center. I can’t believe graduation is just around the corner.
Here at SARC, our hope is that the education we received would bring innovative and inspiring changes to the world as we continue our journey as global citizens. In sticky situations may we always be responsive bystanders and practice healthy relationships through laughter, individuality, negotiation, and equality. May we remain committed to practicing the appropriate responses when our friends ask for help, and may we never forget that consent is fun/foreplay/necessary. I mean, with all those awesome SARC programs, how could we?
SARC also wants to make sure we know there are resources available to us as we take a step out of the UCSD community. The Center for Community Solutions in San Diego County provides prevention and education, as well as counseling and legal advocacy services for people affected by sexual assault or relationship violence. The Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network (RAINN) and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center can provide and connect you or your friends to services you might need in the future.
No matter what our futures may hold, my hope is that we would look toward the next four years expecting to receive a double portion of joy, purpose, laughter, and peace than the last (approximately) four years. The popular saying, “college is the best time of your life,” is neither something we should place upon ourselves nor one another. Let us instead, push one another toward lives increasingly marked by freedom from expectations, freedom from fear, and freedom to love all people without bounds. May this continue to bring us a double portion at every turn that life may bring, despite our circumstances. Congratulations again, UCSD…
